JORHAT: There was a huge traffic disruption in Jorhat town on Monday morning as there was a sudden ground collapse during excavation for the AT Road flyover project. The accident has caused immediate road blockades and diversions, affecting one of the town's busy routes.
The collapse took place on the section between Na-Ali junction and Gar Ali junction (Nirmal Chariali), and district authorities decided to cordon off the area to all vehicular traffic. Alternative routes were made to cut down on congestion, which diverted vehicles coming from the Bhogdoi Bridge side through Gar Ali, maintaining at least a trickle of traffic in the crowded commercial zone.
District Commissioner Jay Shivani said that restoration work is top priority, with technical personnel already on the ground to stabilize the collapsed portion. "We need to move quickly to restore public safety after the ground collapse at the flyover construction site. We know how vital this road is to the daily commute, and we are working diligently to get it reopened as soon as it is safe to do so," he said.
The unexpected closure has caused added delays on detours, mostly affecting school traffic and rush hour. Traffic police have put extra staff at major junctions to control the diverted traffic and reduce delays to solve the problem. Officials are working round the clock to normalize the situation while maintaining the structural stability of the area before reopening traffic.
