BOKAKHAT: The residents of Telgoram, Kanaighat, Porabangla, Deigrong, Marangi, Rongbong, and nearby areas under the jurisdiction of Numaligarh Rural Police Station have been living in fear due to a surge in theft incidents. Over the past few days, burglaries have increased to such an extent that homeowners cannot leave their houses even for a short while. Taking advantage of their absence, a gang of habitual thieves has been looting homes, leaving the residents sleepless.

On Tuesday night, as a group of thieves attempted to carry out a burglary, locals caught two of them and handed them over to Numaligarh Police. The arrested thieves, identified as Kushal Saikia and Riki Hussain, were handcuffed by the police. However, while the police were conducting an operation to track down the rest of the gang, the two thieves managed to escape by jumping from the police vehicle, despite being handcuffed.

The police launched an overnight search operation to capture the escaped thieves. Eventually, they succeeded in recapturing Kushal Saikia, but Riki Hussain remains at large. A massive police operation is still underway to locate him.

Meanwhile, earlier this morning, thieves looted cash and valuables from the house of a businessman named Ontu Baruah in Kanaighat. Even after informing Numaligarh Police immediately, the residents alleged that the police failed to arrive at the scene until noon. As a result, the local residents have strongly criticized Numaligarh Police, accusing them of failing to provide security and ensure law and order in the area.
