GUWAHATI: Two people were arrested by police officials after Rs 71 crore worth of heroin and prohibited Yaba tablets were confiscated during an operation in Assam's Kamrup district on Friday.
Based on a tip-off, Assam Police Special Task Force undertook an operation in the locality of Amingaon and stopped two cars that were driving from an adjacent state.
In the course of the raid operation, police seized 2,70,000 Yaba tablets and 40 soap boxes packed with 520 grams of heroin from the vehicles. Yaba tablets, which are also known as the 'crazy drug', are banned in India because they contain methamphetamine, a chemical under Schedule II of the Controlled Substances Act.
The narcotic tablets were being taken out of state by two couriers who were both nabbed at the site. The total value of Yaba tablets recovered is estimated at Rs 67 crore, whereas the heroin worth is around Rs 4 crore.
The operation was supervised by STF chief Parthasarathi Mahanta, with assistance from Additional SP Kalyan Pathak. The case is currently under further investigation, and legal action has been instituted, the police further added.
Taking to X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “₹70 crore worth of wild party plans? Not happening! Thanks to STF Assam. 2,70,000 YABA tablets seized, Amingaon, Two key peddlers buste, Drugs won’t pass. Not in Assam.”
