DHEKIAJULI: In a unique display of democratic participation, a husband and wife from Sonitpur district’s Misamari area have filed their nominations to contest the upcoming Panchayat election albeit from different villages.

Leela Prasad Newar and his wife Pushpalata Basumatary have thrown their hats into the ring as ward member candidates, contesting independently with the backing of the BJP. While Leela Prasad is contesting from the Ward number 10 of Kathalguri under the Jiyagabharu Gaon Panchayat, Pushpalata Basumatary is contesting from the Ward number 5 of Dighaldol village, which falls under Bahbari Gaon Panchayat under Sonitpur district, her maternal home.

Leela Prasad Newar, a seasoned leader, has already served as a member of the Jiyagabharu Anchalik Panchayat for the past five years. His renewed candidacy is driven by a continued commitment to public service and rural development. Meanwhile, Pushpalata Basumatary, aiming to uplift her birthplace, has stepped into electoral politics with a vision for progress and community empowerment.

Both candidates are contesting as independents, carrying the “Two Leaves” symbol on the ballot. Their simultaneous participation from two different villages stands as a testament to their shared spirit of public service and political engagement.

As the campaign heats up, the husband-wife duo’s entry has added a fascinating dimension to the political landscape of Misamari’s Panchayat election.
