DIGBOI: A carcass of an 8 year-old-wild elephant was found close to a private tea garden here at Bongaon village in Digboi Panbari area under Kherjan forest beat office in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Saturday.

Upon receipt of information, a team of forest personnel and a vet rushed to the site and implemented standard procedures as per wildlife protection norms. The wildlife property was taken into possession and subsequently cremated after due medical and legal proceedings. The prima facie investigation suggested that the young elephant which appeared feeble might have died of an illness which was yet to be ascertained till filing of this report. According to the veterinarian, the tusker might have collapsed on Sunday morning after it emerged out of the Upper Dehing Reserve Forest (East Block).  The incident raised concerns about the safety and health of wild elephants in the region. Earlier on May 30, a mature wild tusker died of electrocution at Lakhipathar area under Upper Dehing Reserve Forest (West Block) under Digboi Forest Division, that too in a private tea garden.
