SILCHAR: A minor girl was killed in a nearby jungle after she was lured from a wedding in Assam's Joypur in Novemer 2022. On Wednesday, a 60-year-old man was pronounced guilty in the case by the Cachar District and Sessions Court and the culprit was sentenced to life imprisonment.

On November 6, 2022, the 15-year-old victim travelled to Dharampur, Joypur, with her family to attend a wedding. She suddenly disappeared from the venue that evening. Her mother filed a missing person's complaint at the Joypur Police Station.

Police discovered during their investigation that the accused had enticed her away at around 7 PM by promising to buy her a few items. On November 8, 2022, he was taken into custody.

He admitted during interrogation that he had taken the victim into a nearby forest, killed her, and then hid the body to cover up the crime. Police recovered the body based on his confession.

Islam Uddin was charged with rape and murder by the police after the discovery. In accordance with sections 4, 8, and 10 of the POCSO Act and sections 376(3), 302, and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), charges were framed.

Although there was no proof of sexual assault, the post-mortem report stated that the victim had been struck and murdered by a blunt object. Thus, the court dismissed the accusations of rape and moved forward with the trial under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused was found guilty of murder on January 29, and was given a life sentence in prison and a Rs 10,000 fine. An extra three months in jail would be imposed for nonpayment of the fine.

In addition, he received a seven-year of prison sentence and a Rs. 5,000 fine for concealing the evidence, with a further one-month punishment if the money is not paid. The two sentences will run concurrently.
