SILCHAR: In a significant move, a man has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Cachar District Court for raping a woman in a tea estate in 2020. The court has imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on the convict, identified as Gobora Bhumij, a resident of the Lower Division of Udharbond Tea Estate.

The incident occurred on March 3, 2020, at Endogram Tea Estate under the Udharbond area of Cachar district, as per the case details. Gobora Bhumij forcibly dragged the victim, a female tea garden worker, into a nearby forest and raped her when she was on her way to the garden office after being summoned.

Following the incident, the accused was named in the FIR after a case was filed at Udharbond Police Station. Police launched an investigation and later submitted a chargesheet against Bhumij under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The district court, after a lengthy trial, handed down the punishment of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine after finding Gobora Bhumij guilty of the crime. Following the verdict, Bhumij was transferred to Silchar Central Jail to serve his sentence.

The judgment serves as a strong message against crimes targeting women and is being seen as a step towards justice for the victim.
