SILCHAR: Finally, the stalemate over the controversy of the continuation of Kalyan Goswami as the Chairman of Hailakandi Municipality Board came to an end as Manab Chakrabarty, as expected, was unanimously picked for the post. Goswami, who was recently made the District BJP President, proposed the name of Chakrabarty as his successor in a meeting held at Ministers’ Colony in Dispur where apart from Hailakandi’s Guardian Minister Krishnendu Paul, his two cabinet colleagues Jayanta Malla Baruah, Kaushik Rai and Ratabari MLA Bijay Malakar were present.
However, the stalemate still persisted for the post of vice-chairman. Goswami proposed the name of Shilpi Das instead of the present Vice-Chairman Pallabi Debnath which was strongly opposed by the latter and her supporters. Baruah however suggested that a team of the state BJP leaders would visit Hailakandi on March 18 and after discussing with all the other ward commissioners, a final decision would be taken.
The Hailakandi Municipality Board has been in news for almost the last one year as the majority of the commissioners virtually revolted against Chairman Kalyan Goswami. Meeting after meeting in Dispur failed to yield any result. However, finally the stalemate came to an end with the decision of the state BJP to pick Goswami as the party’s district president. Goswami, even after assuming the charge of district president, reportedly continued as the municipality chairman as his successor was yet to be finalized.
