SIVASAGAR: The Department of Mathematics, Gargaon College in collaboration with Department of Mathematics, Nazira College and IQAC, Gargaon College observed International Mathematics Day on March 14 by organizing an engaging virtual talk featuring renowned Mathematician and graph theorist Prof Ankur Bharali. The event, moderated by Sujata Goala, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Gargaon College, aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for Mathematics and highlighting its contribution in different fields.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, noted academician and Principal, Gargaon College. In his address, Dr Mahanta appreciated the initiative taken by both the departments to organize the programme and create awareness on the role and scope of Mathematics. He further dwelt on the significance of International Mathematics Day, role of Mathematics in tackling global challenges, its contribution in achieving sustainable goals among other issues.
Dr Kabita Phukon, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Gargaon College, delivered the welcome address. The distinguished guests present on the occasion were Dr Diganta Konwar, Vice-Principal of Gargaon College, Jiten Phukon, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Nazira College, Dr Surajit Saikia, IQAC Coordinator, Gargaon College, Harekrishna Mili, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Gargaon College, esteemed faculty members, and students from both the colleges.
Prof Ankur Bharali, a distinguished Mathematician and Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell at Dibrugarh University, was invited as the Keynote Speaker of the programme. During his hour-long lecture on the topic ‘Mathematics as Muse: The Artistic Symphony of Geometry and Enumeration,’ Prof Bharali, with expertise spanning from various fields such as Chemical Graph Theory, Spectral Graph Theory and Complex Networks, captivated the audience by explaining complex mathematical concepts in an accessible and engaging manner. His discussion covered the mathematical justification for the existence of God, limits, continuity and infinity, and paradoxes, and counter-examples, challenging traditional mathematical thinking while making the subject approachable for all participants. Following the lecture, a 20-minute interactive session allowed students and faculty members to engage directly with Prof Bharali, leading to thought-provoking discussions.
At the conclusion of the programme, the organizing committee expressed gratitude to all participants, faculty members, and technical coordinators who played a crucial role in the event’s success. A special vote of thanks was extended to Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Dr Diganta Konwar, Dr Kabita Phukon, Jiten Phukon, Dr Surajit Saikia, Harekrishna Mili, and the technical team for their unwavering support in making the event successful. Host Sujata Goala concluded the session by acknowledging the enthusiasm of students and faculty, expressing hope for more such academic events in the future to inspire young minds and deepen their understanding of Mathematics.
