Assam: Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass Visits Madhupur and Baikunthapur Xatras in West Bengal

DHUBRI: Assam's Tourism, Panchayat, and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass visited the historic Madhupur Satra in Koch Bihar district of West Bengal, the Mahaprayan (final resting place) of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, on Wednesday.

He also visited Baikunthapur Satra, the mahaprayan of Mahapurush Damodardev.

During his visit, Minister Dass interacted with the Xatradhikars (heads of the Xatras) and expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the upcoming Madhupur Festival, which will be held from January 29 to 31.

The festival is being organized by the Assam Tourism Department and the Dhubri District Administration.

Minister Dass said that Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma would attend the festival's inaugural event.

He also mentioned that Xatradhikars and Deka Xatradhikars from various xatras across Assam will participate in the event.

During his visit to Baikunthapur Satra, Minister Dass saw the belongings of Mahapurush Damodardev, including his bed and kharam (a traditional Assamese item).

He also took stock of the overall environment of the Xatra.

Speaking to the media, Minister Dass said that the Assam government will take steps to develop Baikunthapur Satra as a major tourist destination.  He also announced that a booklet on the Xatra would be published in Hindi, Bengali, and English to attract tourists from outside the state. Dass was accompanied by Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath, Xatra officials, and other dignitaries.
