BISWANATH CHARIALI: The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated at the auditorium of Biswanath College of Agriculture with around 300 weavers and other participants on Thursday. The day was organized by Weavers’ Service Centre, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Department of Handloom and Textiles, Biswanath, and National Handloom Development Corporation Limited, Guwahati.
Two renowned handloom entrepreneurs-cum-exporters were present as the resource persons, namely Hiralal Kalita and Jugal Bharali exhibiting their exportable products. They also briefed about their success stories in handloom weaving. Handloom Weavers’ MUDRA loan of total amounting Rs 9,00,000 was sanctioned to nine individual weavers while death claim of Rs 2,00,000 under PMJJBY was given to one beneficiary on the occasion of the day.
Exhibition of different qualities of natural value-added yarn, local weavers’ products, SAMARTH training products, exporter products of natural dyed Eri spun silk, Muga silk, Tassar silk, etc. were displayed at the event venue.
Under ‘do it yourself concept,’ one fly shuttle frame loom was installed at the venue, wherein a good number of students had hands-on experience in handloom weaving.
Grant sanction certificates to 10 weavers under HSS (NHDP), yarn passbooks to five, Pehchan Cards to five, and felicitation to five weavers for their extraordinary works were also given while detailed explanations about the different centrally and state-sponsored schemes for the welfare of the weavers were done by the guests. MLAs Promod Borthakur and Diganta Ghatowal, Associate Dean, Biswanath College of Agriculture Dr RN Barman, Regional In-charge, NER, NHDC Sandip Chetiya, LDM, Biswanath district Sandip Debnath, Assistant Director, Handloom and Textiles, Government of Assam Naba Dweep Kalita, and others were present on the occasion.
A skill upgradation training programme for thirty weavers under SAMARTH was inaugurated on the occasion at Biswanath ghat by Borthakur, Biswanath MLA.
MORIGAON: The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Bihutoli Auditorium, Morigaon, Assam, organized by the North East People’s Development Federation (NEPDF), Assam, under the sponsored programme of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi, in association with the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Government of Assam, Morigaon, on August 7. The daylong celebration aimed to honour and promote the contributions of the handloom weaving community, acknowledging their pivotal role in the socio-economic development of the nation.
The event drew participation from thousands of weavers and local residents, along with distinguished dignitaries including Pranab Jyoti Mosrong, Executive Member, and Ajit Deka, Member of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Orpah Baglary, Principal Secretary, Tiwa Autonomous Council & Chairperson, NEPDF, NN Rana Patgiri, Principal Advisor, NEPDF and former senior official in the Handloom & Textiles sector, Chetana Das, eminent Assamese cine artiste, Nirupam Roychoudhury, I/C Assistant Director, Sericulture, Govt of Assam, Morigaon, Kamal Kumar Baruah, Additional Director, NEPDF, and Bidyut Rana Patgiri, Director & CEO, NEPDF.
A major highlight was the inauguration of a 45-day Skill Development Training on Handloom Weaving under the SAMARTH Scheme by the Weavers’ Service Centre, Guwahati, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, in collaboration with NEPDF. The inauguration was graced by Binda Bordoloi, Ex-Executive Member, Tiwa Autonomous Council, Phuleswari Das, Member, Bhurbandha Anchalik Panchayat, Phulsing Das, President, Bhagavad Gita Satra, Bhatkhowabori, officials from the Weavers’ Service Centre and NEPDF, Master Trainers, and other guests.
The programme also featured a facilitation ceremony honouring handloom weavers nominated by the Office of the Assistant Director, Handloom & Textiles, Morigaon. An exclusive exhibition-cum-sale has been organized from August 5 for five days, with participation from 20 Handloom Weavers, Entrepreneurs, SHGs, and Societies.
A seminar-cum-workshop was also conducted, with sessions led by Praneeta Baruah, Assistant Director, Handloom & Textiles, on Marketing of Assam Handlooms, and Shyamal Kumar Saikia, Assistant Education Officer, Assam Cooperative Union, on Formation of Cooperative Societies in Tiwa Autonomous Council areas.
