Assam: Noted Sports Organiser Gouri Shankar Roy Passes Away

Gouri Shankar Roy, a noted sports organizer and social worker from Nagaon, passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati due to kidney-related complications.

NAGAON: Gouri Shankar Roy, a noted sports organizer and social worker from Nagaon, passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati due to kidney-related complications on Tuesday. He was 66.

Roy was closely associated with the Nagaon Sports Association for a long time and served as an executive member. He was also the physical instructor of Nagaon Bengali Higher Secondary School and the vice-president of Nagaon Bengali Sanmilan. Known for his excellent handwriting and experienced announcer skills, Roy had also served as the secretary and president of Uday Sangha, a leading sports organization affiliated with the Nagaon Sports Association. Roy’s earthly remains were first taken to the office premises of the Bangali Sanmilan on Wednesday, where he was given farewell. Later, his body was taken to the office of the Nagaon Sports Association, where the association’s flag was lowered to half-mast, and floral tributes were offered. 

Rupak Sarma, local MLA and the President of the Nagaon Sports Association, expressed deep condolences on Roy’s demise, describing it as an irreparable loss for the sports fraternity in Nagaon. The association’s flag will remain at half-mast for three days, and all practices will be suspended in his honour.

From the Sports Association, Roy’s body was taken to his former workplace, Bengali Higher Secondary School, where teachers and students paid their last respects. The local sports community, various organizations, and sports institutions condoled Roy’s death and expressed sympathy with his family. Roy’s final rites were performed at the Nagaon Crematorium in the presence of many admirers. Gouri Shankar Roy is survived by his wife and other relatives. His demise was mourned by the people of Nagaon, who remember him for his contributions to sports and society.
