Assam: Pothorughat gets national honour with release of postage stamp by Government of India

After 131 years, the 1894 Peasants' Uprising at Pothorughat received national recognition with a commemorative postage stamp released by the Government of India.

MANGALDAI: Following the prolonged wait for the last 131 years, the historic Peasants Uprising and the supreme sacrifice of 140 rural peasants at the sleepy village of Pothorughat in Darrang district on January 28 of 1894, finally got the national recognition and honour from the Government of India with the release of a commemorative postage stamp today on this historic episode printed by the Department of Post, Government of India. Darrang-Udalguri Parliamentarian and State BJP President Dilip Saikia ceremonially released the postage stamp in the largely attended open meeting of Krishak Swahid Divas celebration at Pothorughat. Minister Atul Bora and Chandra Mohan Patowary, Legislator Basanta Das, Director of Postal Service, Assam Abhishek Jain, Director of Postal Service Training Center, Assam Priyangka Jain, and District Commissioner Parag Kumar Kakaty also attended the stamp release function presided over by Sipajhar Legislator Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi.

Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia, who has been relentlessly taking up his initiative to grant national honour and recognition to the Krishak Vidroh and the supreme sacrifice of the 140 Krishak Swahids and who also played the key role in printing of the postage stamp, in his speech, described Pothorughat Krishak memorial as the ‘Shakti Sthal’ and reiterated the commitment of BJP’s double engine government to take it to the national level and in the pages of the glorious history of the freedom struggle of India.

Taking part in the function, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora released the souvenir edited by Ripunjoy Saikia and Mostak Hussain. Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Vice President of Asom Sahitya Sabha Padum Rajkhowa, Secretary of already dissolved ULFA Anup Chetia, Director of Postal Service Abhishek Jain also addressed the function. Earlier, District Commissioner Parag Kumar Kakaty accorded a warm welcome to the guests and the audience in his welcome speech. All the guests also paid floral homage at the Krishak Swahid Memorial.

Mention may be made here that senior journalist Bhargab Kumar Das of ‘The Sentinel’ earlier on the first day’s program of Krishak Swahid Divas on January 26, delivered a memorial lecture on the role of the freedom fighters of Darrang district in the Freedom Movement with reference to Krishak Vidroh of Pothorughat while Minister Ranjeet Dass also spoke on the valiant role of the people of Darrang district in the Freedom Movement.

The Natun Douranga Publications, a co-host of the celebration on January 27, offered ‘Bhasha Gourav’ honour to five prominent personalities of Darrang district and offered felicitation to thirty prominent folklore artistes and several ideal progressive farmers of the district.

Prominent artistes of repute Dwipen Barua, Tarali Sarma, Birina Pathak, and Jeena Rajkumari enthralled the cultural evening on the concluding day’s program with their melodious performance.
