DIBRUGARH: A 25-member team of Punjab Police today took custody of two close associates of Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh, who have been lodged at the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail since March 2023.
The Punjab Police team secured the custody of Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala and Bhagwant Singh after getting permission from the local court. It had applied for the transit remand of seven Waris Punjab De members lodged in Dibrugarh Jail but managed to secure permission for only two of them due to some legal complications.
Sources said that the Punjab Police will again apply for permission for the transit remand of the rest of the members named Basant Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla alias Guri Aujla, Harjeet Singh, and Daljeet Singh Kalsi on Tuesday. They will then be flown to Punjab under heavy security to face trial in the 2023 Ajnala Police Station attack case. After securing their custody, Punjab Police will formally arrest all seven in connection with the case. Previously, these individuals were detained under the National Security Act (NSA) but had not been formally charged in the police station attack case.
The move comes as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Government decided not to reinvoke the NSA against the seven Waris Punjab De members, whose two-year detention period is set to expire on March 19. The remaining three Waris Punjab De members including Amritpal Singh, Varinder Singh Johal, and Papalpreet Singh will however continue to remain in the Dibrugarh Jail until the Punjab Government takes further decision.
Notably, Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 General Elections from the Dibrugarh Jail.
