TINSUKIA: A rare sighting of the Sarus Crane (Grus antigone) has been reported in the Saikhowa region of Tinsukia, attracting numerous bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The majestic bird, known for being the world’s tallest flying bird, was spotted in the Dhadung grasslands of Tinsukia, marking the third recorded sighting in Assam.
Previously, the Sarus Crane was seen in Manas National Park in 2021, which was the first recorded sighting in Assam. Later that same year, the species was spotted in Tinsukia for the second time. The latest sighting in 2025 has once again sparked excitement among ornithologists and conservationists.
The arrival of the Sarus Crane in Tinsukia highlights the region’s potential as a suitable habitat for rare and migratory birds. Local environmentalists and wildlife officials are closely monitoring the crane’s movements, hoping the discovery could lead to further studies on the bird’s migratory patterns in Northeast India.
Bird watchers and nature photographers have been gathering in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the rare species, making the discovery a momentous event for Assam’s birding community. Conservationists are urging authorities to take necessary steps to protect the region’s wetlands, which serve as critical stopover points for migratory birds.
As bird enthusiasts continue to visit the site, experts emphasize the importance of responsible tourism to ensure the Sarus Crane is not disturbed in its natural habitat.
