TANGLA: After abysmally low performance of students of Udalguri district in the last Higher Secondary (HS) and High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations which is dipping downwards from the last couple of years, a comprehensive review meeting aimed at addressing these issues in the education sector of Udalguri district was convened on Friday at the conference hall of the Office of the Inspector of Schools, Udalguri. The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the education and administrative sectors to deliberate on challenges and formulate actionable strategies for academic uplift. The meeting was chaired by Inspector of Schools, Udalguri, Bhaben Deury and attended by Deputy Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and MLA of Udalguri LAC, Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, who graced the occasion as the chief guest along with activists of Udalguri district committee of All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU). The meeting held threadbare discussions on critical aspects such as the performance of the district in the last Higher Secondary (HS) and High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations, the outcome of the recent Gunotsav, infrastructure deficiencies in educational institutions, teacher vacancies due to retirements, and the persistent issue of single-teacher schools—particularly at the lower primary level in the district. Participants expressed grave concern over the low enrollment rates in government-run primary schools, attributing it largely to the lack of adequate teaching staff. Emphasis was laid on the urgent need for the appointment of teachers in key subjects and ensuring adequate faculty strength in remote and rural areas. The forum collectively urged the concerned authorities to take prompt and effective measures to resolve the shortcomings and enhance the academic performance in the forthcoming HS and HSLC examinations. As a gesture of encouragement, the Inspector of Schools felicitated 20 top-performing students from the district. These included three each from the HS Arts, Science, and Commerce streams, three each from the HSLC Assamese and Bodo medium categories, two from the Bengali medium, and three overall top scorers in the district. Each awardee received a certificate of merit and a traditional aronai.
