SIVASAGAR: Sibsagar Press Club, a leading institution representing journalists in the region, celebrated its 33rd foundation day with great enthusiasm and solemnity today. The event began at 9:30am with the hoisting of the club’s flag by senior journalist and social worker Monirul Islam Bora.

In his address, Bora recounted the history of the club, established on January 11, 1993, on a plot of land near Dolmukh Chariali in Sivasagar town, which was once encroached upon illegally. The club owes its inception to the efforts of visionaries like former Axom Xahitya Xabha President Biren Borkotoky, Professor Sarat Mahanta, Jyoti Prasad Chaliha, and Guna Baruah. Over the past 33 years, the club has made significant contributions to Assam’s social, cultural, sporting, and intellectual fields, Bora remarked.

Later, Monirul Islam Bora formally inaugurated two newly reconstructed rooms of the club, funded with Rs 3 lakh from the Member of Parliament fund of former Jorhat MP Tapan Kumar Gogoi.

In the evening, a tribute meeting was held at the club’s conference hall, chaired by its Acting General Secretary Himangshu Neog. The session began with the lighting of ceremonial lamps before portraits of former advisors and key contributors to the club, including writer and former chief advisor Biren Borkotoky, advisors Sarat Mahanta and Guna Barua, and members Alforid Sajad, Jiten Chutia, Pranjal Dutta and Luit Chaliha.

Family members of the deceased and dignitaries offered floral tributes during the programme. President of the club and noted columnist Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta highlighted the invaluable contributions made by these individuals towards the growth and prominence of the Sibsagar Press Club.

The event was graced by several notable personalities, including President of the Sivasagar District Sports Association Punaram Mili, actor and director Rupak Bhuyan, environmentalist Zehiruddin Khan, and Imtiaz Ahmed. Other respected figures from the social sphere of Sivasagar were also present.

Following the tribute meeting, the club distributed food packets and blankets to impoverished families residing in different parts of the town, marking the day with a gesture of kindness and community service.
