Silchar: Preparation at last for the much awaited Silchar civic body election had begun as the district administration had organized the all-party meeting to chalk out the seat reservation through lottery. Out of 42 wards of the newly-upgraded corporation, 21 wards were reserved for the women, including three for the SC community, and the rest, 21, remained open, including 4 reserved for the SC.
On Monday the Deputy Commissioner, Mridul Yadav, conducted the allocation of seats by the lottery system in the presence of representatives of all the recognized parties.
The 28-ward Silchar Municipality Board had been upgraded as a corporation with 42 wards in 2022. However, the inclusion of new areas had been challenged in the Gauhati High Court, and the process of holding the election could not be initiated for almost two years. The term of the municipality board expired in 2020, and for the last five years, the civic body was being run by the district administration. This had created much problem, as per the municipality act, there were several functions and decisions that could only be taken by the elected representatives.
