HAFLONG: Sparsh Leprosy Awareness campaign, organized by the District Health Society & NLEP, Dima Hasao, was held at the office of the Joint Director, Medical & Health Services, Haflong today.
The meeting was chaired by Joint Director, Medical & Health Services Dr Naba Kumar Bailung in presence of Dr Kalpana Kemprai, Dr L Vaiphei, District Nodal Officer, DTCC, and medical officials.
The main objective of the campaign is to spread awareness on Leprosy. Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium leper). It appears as a hypo-pigmented patch(s) on skin with definite loss of sensation. It affects nerves, skin and eyes. According to the report, currently three leprosy cases have been identified in Dima Hasao district.
Joint Director, Medical & Health Services, Dr Naba Kumar Bailung emphasized on the importance of early detection and immediate treatment of Leprosy disease to prevent physical disabilities and reduced stigma. Further he appealed to the other Departments including Social Welfare, Education Department and Social Organization for ending stigma with the ultimate goal of making a Leprosy-free district.
During the meeting, Medical Officer (AYUI) Archana Kemprai informed that the Sparsh Leprosy Awareness campaign will be launched on January 30 on Anti-Leprosy day. The campaign will be carried out in Dima Hasao district from January 31 to February 13.
