SILCHAR: Barring a few incidents of chaos, violence, and even bloodshed, voting for the Panchayat election passed off peacefully otherwise in the three districts of Barak Valley. Reports of violence poured in from various parts of Cachar and Sribhumi. However, long queues of voters could be seen in almost all the 1,706 polling booths in Cachar. In Cachar, the percentage of voting was 58 percent till 3 PM while Sribhumi and Hailakandi recorded 60 percent voting.
Reports of chaos and violence were received mainly from the Borkhola and Katigorah constituencies. Five persons were injured at Tarinipur in Katigorah after violence broke out at Polling Station 876, Boalipar LP School. Polling was stopped temporarily as voters were seen running away.
In another case, a brawl broke out at Polling Station 2 under Phulbari Tarinipur GP. Allegations of physical assault sparked tension resulting in the deployment of additional forces in the area. Those injured were shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital.
Reports of chaos were received from the South Karimganj Assembly constituency. Voting was halted at a polling station at Medal Sharif Nagar GP after a candidate noticed a mismatch in the election symbols printed on the ballot papers. Similar reports of chaos and even violence were also received from the Ramakrishna Nagar area.
