Assam State Health Dept. quarantines 400 people who came in touch with American tourist

GUWAHATI: Assam State Health Department has quarantined 400 people who came in touch with American tourist who tested positive for coronavirus in Bhutan.

Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “State Health Dept has traced more than 400 contacts in different places including MV Mahabahu and resorts where he stayed. Teams of doctors and microbiologists have been keeping a close watch on these people who have been quarantined.”

He further added, “So far, 5 tests done and all are negative. Even partner of American tourist is reported to be negative. Appeal to all in #Assam not to panic and observe all protocols including personal hygiene. With your cooperation, we will safely sail through these turbulent times.”

For a fact, the patient is a 76-year-old from the United States of America had entered Bhutan from Paro International Airport, after embarking Drukair flight KB241 from Guwahati, India on March 2, according to Prime Minister’s Office – PMO, Bhutan’s FB page.

As per reports, the US tourist had arrived Assam on February 22. He reached Jorhat from Kolkata by air. He had spent two nights in the luxurious resort of Jorhat, Thengal Menon. On February 25 the tourist had travelled to Majuli to visit Vaishynavite monasteries, i.e. the Satras. During his visit to the North Kamalabari Satra, he had watched there Gayan Bayan (a religious dance form of the Neo-Vaishnavites) and Ankia Bhaona (a religious drama founded by Mahapurush Srimamanta Sankardev). Later, he had reached Guwahati in a river cruise M G Mahabahu after a journey of about seven days. His journey ended well in Assam but he was detected with the deadly coronavirus in Bhutan.

The largest human inhabited river island Majuli and Jorhat are now under alert.

Total coronavirus cases in India currently stand at 41.

India’s first coronavirus patient, a 24-year-old girl who contracted coronavirus after returning from Wuhan, was discharged from Thrissur Medical College Hopsital in February.

The patient has successfully managed to battle the condition which has left many people dead and infected in China. The student said that she had decided to leave China pose the outbreak and found a ticket to Kolkata.
