NAGAON: The 43rd Swahid Divas of Sardar Chandan Singh who made the supreme sacrifice of his life for the mother land in the police firing during the Assam movement in the year 1983 was observed at Hatipara of Nagaon district recently.
The people of Hatipara and its neighbouring areas wholeheartedly attended the event. He was the 1st martyr of Borkola area among 3 martyrs including Sardar Karam Singh and Baliram Mazumdar.
The commemoration programme was started with lighting of lamp and paying of floral tribute to the martyr, followed by recitation of holly Sri Sukhmoni Saheb by Gyani Sher Singh and the congregation prayed to Almighty Waheguruji for the eternal peace of the martyr.
Chandan Singh was born at Borkola and he completed primary school from the 150 years old Borkola Adarsh Vidyalaya and completed HSLC from Borkola H S School in the year 1978 and later he was admitted in the historic Nowgong College for graduation. During that period he was not only actively involved in Assam movement by heart and soul, he also served as secretary of Dakhinpat Anchalik, vice president of Dakhinpat Anchalik Gana Parishad, member, Bebejia Gana Parishad and member of Nagaon District AASU.
He was an inter-school district level football player during that time. The programme concluded with serving of community foods to the attendees by his younger sister Amarjeet Kaur.
