TEZPUR: Tezpur-based TV journalist Manoj Borah was assaulted on Monday while covering a World TB Day awareness rally in Tezpur Town. The incident took place when the accused, identified as Sharif Uddin, driver of a vehicle with registration number AS12X 0743, attacked Borah on the main road, allegedly demanding that the way be cleared, even in the presence of the police.
Following the attack, Sonitpur Police arrested Sharif Uddin, a resident of the Borghat area, under Sections 304/117/296/351 and sent him to jail today, police officials said. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various organizations, including AASU’s Tezpur Regional and Sonitpur District Student Unions, JAFA, Ketekibari Bihu Committee, Sonitpur District Former AASU Members, and many social organisations.
“This is a grave violation of press freedom and an attack on journalists’ fundamental right to perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation. Such actions undermine democracy and the essential role of the press in a free society,” the organizations stated.
