MANGALDAI: Failure of the Congress and other opposition parties to field candidates have paved the way for the uncontested victory of two BJP candidates in two Zila Parishad (ZP) seats in Darrang district. On the final day of filing of nominations on Friday, Bitopan Deka, the BJP candidate in Rangamati ZP seat under Mangaldai LAC and his party mate Parismita Nath in Hazarikapara - Kuruwa ZP seat under Sipajhar LAC have been declared as winners uncontested.

Earlier both of them along with six other candidates of the saffron party filed their nomination papers in presence of State BJP President and Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia. BJP while sharing seats with their alliance partner AGP contested for eight ZP seats out of the total of twelve while AGP fielded candidates for the remaining four seats in the district. Out of the total of 75 Anchalik Panchayat( AP) seats in the district, the ruling BJP fielded candidates for 49 AP seats leaving the remaining 26 seats for AGP. On the other hand the main opposition Congress failed to find candidates for several seats. Despite several attempts for the list of the party candidates, Darrang District Congress president and its general secretary could not be contacted over phone. Meanwhile the final data of nominations was not available till filing of this report as the process was reportedly going on till late this evening. It may be mentioned here that following delimitation this time Panchayat polls will be held for 12 ZP, 75 AP and 750 Panchayat Ward Member seats in the district.
