DIBRUGARH: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday recognized the Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College (DHSK College) as an autonomous college. The college, which received ‘A’ grade in the NAAC assessment, was declared an autonomous college as per University Grants Commission letter No. F.2-10/2023 (AC-Policy) dated April 17, 2025.

However, the Dibrugarh University authorities are required to issue a notice within 30 days to declare it as an autonomous college as per the policy of the University Grants Commission. The college has already received ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Training Programme) approval under the NCTE of the Central Government.

After Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia joined the college as the Principal, the infrastructure, academic, administration and technology underwent remarkable changes. The college conducts student union elections in online mode and student attendance is also conducted online. Perhaps this is the first in the country. It has also been discussed at various times as an exceptional move.

In the past, the college has received great praise from the people for its exceptional work in the field of education. The college has won the Best Discipline Award continuously for three times under Dibrugarh University and was also recognized as the best clean college. The college was declared a tobacco-free college by the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Union Government a few days ago. Dibrugarh District Administration, Dibrugarh Municipality, Neheru Yuva Kendra, Dibrugarh Nagarik Mancha, and many other organizations and institutions have also awarded the college.

The college’s Principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia was conferred the Karmasurya title by the then Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on behalf of the Dibrugarh District Karmachari Parisad. The Principal has also been conferred many titles and honours by various institutions including Dibru Hitaishi, Dinbandhu, Best Principal Performance Award, etc.

The letter was sent to the Principal of the college by the University Grants Commission on April 17, 2025. The college was established on 15 June 1945 as Dibrugarh College and later became known as Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College.

The Principal thanked everyone after receiving the letter from the University Grants Commission and said that the pace of development of the college would not have accelerated without the cooperation of everyone. He also thanked the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Jiten Hazarika, Registrar Paramananda Sonwal, and Inspector of Colleges Dr Rupam Saikia for their cooperation at all times. He also thanked the people of Dibrugarh for their support and cooperation to the college at various times.
