DIGBOI: Security forces in Assam’s Tinsukia district arrested an alleged linkman of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) during intensified operations in the run-up to Independence Day. The suspected individual was identified as Ramesn Bhumiz (31) a resident of Sivasagar.
The arrest took place in Digboi on Tuesday morning following specific intelligence about tangible movements of suspected conduits in the area.
The alleged conduit having precedence of association with the banned ULFA outfit was nabbed from Raiding village close to Tingrai, the Iconic venue for nation’s 79th Independence Day celebration.
The Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarter) Tinsukia and his team nabbed the suspected rebel from an agricultural field. The alleged linkman who admitted his earlier association with the ULFA rebel group belongs to Sivasagar.
The technical details of the apprehended person have been kept confidential for the sake of investigation.
Meanwhile, apprehensions run high following the arrest of the former member of the rebel group from around a 5-km distance from the flag hoisting site at Tingrai general ground.
Notably, Tingrai will witness its first celebration of the country’s Independence Day under the initiative of Digboi co-district administration.
“The arrest of suspected individuals and interrogation is part of a wider security sweep across the district aiming at neutralizing militant networks if any before Independence Day,” said Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, the Superintendent of Police, during his telephonic interaction with the North East Now.
“We are leaving no room for any disruptive activity in the district and all security measures have been beefed up adequately besides tracking the movements of suspected individuals. Public cooperation is very critical to ensure peaceful celebrations,” added the top cop.
The interrogation of the apprehended linkman continued till filing of the report.
