Silchar: Another controversy strikes Assam University's 18th Convocation as the vice-chancellor, professor DC Nath confirmed that the convocation has been postponed from December 24 to December 25.

The event where degrees are handed over to the scholars is mostly graced by guests like the President of India or the Governor. This year, the Guest of Honour will be Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

A number of controversies were already looming above the Convocation as the administration had put a restriction on the number of attendees to 250. This move irked many students as they all want to receive their degree at the venue.

"We need to understand that this is not possible. Not only this time but as the number of students rises, it will never be possible to physically accommodate all the passing students in convocation," VC Nath said.

The students demanded that if they are not allowed to attend the Convocation then the fees charged must be refunded back to them. "Students can attend the convocation virtually and if they don't want to, we will return the whole amount charged to them," added VC Nath.

He is of the opinion that the convocation cannot be delayed further as there is another one due in March 2021.

Many questioned why the chief guest isn't the President or the Governor this year, to which VC Nath had replied, "It is good for the University to have a minister attend the convocation. It is also very tough to get a minister."

He further added, "We had invited the Education Minister of India to attend the Convocation. This time he could not, in March we will again try to have him attend the next Convocation as the Guest of Honour."

Earlier, Nitin Gadkari's office had confirmed that the physical travelling plans were on hold and the Minister shall attend the Convocation on December 24, virtually.
