Tezpur: The Narendra Deva Shastri Memorial Award is given away every year to a person having contributions towards literature, culture, journalism and educational field by the Sonitpur Press Club. It will be conferred on senior journalist, social activist and former student leader Bhargab Kumar Das for the year 2024 on December 10, the birth anniversary of the literary scholar, journalist, and Sanskrit Pandit Narendra Dev Shastri. A memorial lecture titled “Newspapers and Journalism: Past and Future” will be held in Tezpur.
Narendra Dev Shastri Memorial Award 2024 will be presented to Bhargab Kumar Das, a senior journalist from Mangaldai with 37 years of dedicated experience in journalism. A key figure in the historical identity preservation movement in undivided Darrang district, Bhargab Kumar Das is also a prominent social worker, sportsperson, and activist.
Bhargab Kumar Das is a veteran journalist who started his career with The Sentinel on October 22, 1988. He became the first journalist in Assam to be detained under the TADA Act in 1990, serving seven months in prison. His contributions to journalism, student leadership, and community development are remarkable. He is also serving as the general secretary of the North Mangaldoi Students’ Union in 1979, Vice-president of Kalai Gaon Regional Students’ Union.
He was detained under the National Security Act in 1982 and subsequently was involved with Assam socio-political movements. He has founding roles in various organizations, including the Kalai Gaon Sports Association. He is actively engaged with Amar Asom newspaper since 2012 as the Mangaldoi representative.
Additionally, Das also a badminton player and remains involved in numerous socio-cultural activities. Prithiraj Rabha, MLA of Tezpur, Basanta Das, MLA of Mangaldoi Ankur Bharali, District Commissioner of Sonitpur will be special guests.
The memorial lecture will be delivered by Dr. Pranjit Hazarika, a renowned academic, retired professor from Tezpur.
The event will also honour senior journalist Nathmal Tibrewal, eminent writer and poet Bipin Kotoki, and veteran physician Dr. Suren Gogoi for their significant contributions to their respective fields.
