BISWANATH CHARIALI: To mitigate drought-like situations and other harsh realities of climate change, the District Agricultural Office, Biswanath held a meeting on Friday to discuss the preparedness of contingency planning for Kharif crops during the year 2025. The meet attended by the officers from the Department of Agriculture, Biswanath, the scientists from AICRPDA, Biswanath College of Agriculture, Assam Agricultural University, focused on creating awareness and preparation of contingency plans to fight against probable drought-like situations and undertook salient decisions including organizing awareness programmes for stakeholders on contingency measures, land situation-wise crop selection to mitigate drought and flood, raising community nursery for both drought and flood-like situations, which includes varieties like Gitesh for staggered transplanting, implementation of farm mechanization such as dry Direct Seeding Of Rice (DSR), promotion of drought-resistant paddy seed varieties like CR 802 and Bina 11.

The meet also stressed on utilization of petrol and solar pump sets provided to the beneficiaries of agriculture department, collaboration with the irrigation department for detailed information on created areas of irrigation facilities, adoption of crops like green gram, summer maize, fodder crops, etc. soon after flood and drought-like situations, conducting pest and disease surveillance using drones and circulation of Agromet advisories among farmers, and creation of awareness on central schemes like PM Fasal Bima Yojana, PMKSY, PM Kisan, Farmers Registry through the agricultural development officers and their field functionaries including ATMA functionaries in Biswanath.
