DIGBOI: In a high-voltage show of strength, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday staged a massive election rally at Balijan public auditorium in Digboi, drawing an unprecedented crowd and underlining its electoral dominance in the constituency. The rally, held in support of party candidate Suren Phukan, saw a surge of enthusiastic supporters, turning the venue into a charged political arena.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the star campaigner of the day, delivered an aggressive and combative speech, blending development claims with sharp attacks on the opposition. He credited Phukan for ‘working tirelessly on the ground’ and asserted that Digboi’s visible transformation reflects the BJP’s governance model.
“Development in Digboi is not a promise—it is a visible reality,” Sonowal declared, urging party cadres to intensify door-to-door campaigning and ensure maximum voter outreach in the final stretch before polls. Projecting confidence in the BJP’s electoral roadmap, Sonowal said that the party’s pre-poll commitments would be executed ‘with precision and accountability,’ reinforcing the government’s development-first narrative.
Launching a direct offensive against Congress, Sonowal accused the party of ‘decades of neglect’ in Digboi, particularly flagging its failure to modernize the iconic Digboi Refinery. Drawing a contrast, he said the government under Narendra Modi enhanced the refinery’s capacity significantly—calling it a ‘historic correction of past inaction.’
He further invoked cultural pride, stating that the global recognition of Assam’s traditional gamocha under Modi’s leadership symbolized the Centre’s commitment to the state’s identity and heritage.
Earlier, Suren Phukan, addressing the gathering, struck a confident tone, citing ‘visible, measurable development’ across Digboi during his tenure. Backed by the leadership of Dr Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Phukan said that the constituency had witnessed a ‘complete turnaround.’ “This election will be decided on work, not words,” he asserted, claiming he would secure victory by a margin of over 50,000 votes.
