ORANG: As the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections approach in September, political activity has intensified across the region. Both regional and national parties have started reaching out to the public in various ways. In this context, a significant awareness and workers’ meeting was held on July 28 at Nij Rangapani village under Dhanshreeghat of Udalguri district. The event was organized by the Gorkha Jatio Cell of the Dhanshree block committee of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The meeting was presided over by Karna Chetri, president of the Udalguri district committee of the Gorkha Jatio Cell, while Raj Kiranti Subba, general secretary of the Dhanshree Block Gorkha Jatio Cell, coordinated the proceedings.
The central guest of the event was Nandalal Rana Magar, central president of the BPF Gorkha Jatio Cell. The meeting witnessed the presence of Charan Boro, MLA of the Mazbat Legislative Assembly Constituency, who addressed the gathering as a special guest. During his speech, Boro assured the public that if BPF returns to power in the BTC, land rights will be granted to all communities without discrimination. He strongly criticized the current administration’s eviction drives, stating that peace is being disturbed under the guise of governance. He urged the public to consider carefully which revenue villages have been handed over to the government as part of the eviction plan and to reflect on the mental stress these decisions have caused ordinary citizens.
Addressing the attendees, Dhanshree Constituency Councillor Fres Mosahary reassured the Gorkha community that there was no reason to fear, emphasizing that as per the BTC Accord, all communities residing in the region prior to February 10, 2003, have full and legal rights in the BTC. He said that no one can take those rights away. He also asked the public to review Clause 7.2 of the BTR Accord, claiming that only the BPF had brought real peace to the region through the agreement signed by Promod Boro.
The event, inaugurated by Soneshwar Wary, president of the BPF Bhairabkunda block committee, was attended by several prominent leaders including former Bhairabkunda constituency councillor Ripen Daimary, central executive members Nar Katwal, Narayan Upadhyay, Tulsi Gautam, and officials from the central and district Gorkha National Cells.
Notably, the gathering drew a crowd of nearly 400 Gorkha community members from across the Dhanshree block, reflecting growing grassroots support for the BPF ahead of the upcoming BTC polls.
The workers’ meeting which began at 2 pmconcluded by 6 pm on Monday.
