SILCHAR: A case of black fungus detected in a patient on May 29 and subsequently confirmed by an official of the health department followed by denial by SMCH authority created lot of confusion in public mind, besides panic. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli had to issue clarification that the case was under investigation and that it would be premature to confirm it as a case of black fungus. On May 30, a press-meet was convened at SMCH addressed by the Deputy Commissioner and the Principal, Babul Bezbarua, with Dr Rajdeep Roy MP by their side to say, "As the culture of the case is underway, it is yet to be confirmed."

1st Black Fungus Case in Silchar (SMCH)

Today at 6pm, Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice-Principal of SMCH, in a video address to mediapersons finally said it is a case of Black Fungus after necessary investigation and report from the competent authority. The patient identified as Ananta Deb (42) of Karimganj was admitted in SMCH on May 26 after he was infected by COVID-19 though his COVID report came negative on May 15. But, as his condition was not well, DR Gupta said he had been under treatment in two private nursing homes where he did not show any sign of improvement.

When he was brought to SMCH, COVID-19 symptoms were detected. His right eye had problem with dimmed vision which also affected his brain, Dr Gupta pointed out. Besides, black fungus was detected in his nose on May 29. The team of doctors are now thinking how to remove the areas affected by applying the latest technology. His diabetes is under control and the condition of patient is stable. There is no other case of fungus as is being rumoured, Dr Bhaskar Gupta said.
