SILCHAR: Much hullabaloo was created on Wednesday near the Khudiram statue in Silchar as a posse of policemen tried to prevent the Congress cadres who had assembled there to burn an effigy of Amit Malviya, the IT cell head of the BJP, for his remark that Sylheti was a Bangladeshi dialect. Silchar Congress on Wednesday brought out a protest rally led by its president Sajal Acharjee and MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar shouting slogans against harassment of the Bengali-speaking people in various BJP-ruled states in recent times.

The Congress workers shouted slogans against Malviya alleging that he had insulted the Bengali community with ill intention. As the agitated Congressmen blocked the road  leading to the Deputy Commissioner office and the district court premise, police tried to disperse them resulting in a chaotic situation. Few Congressmen were also picked up by the police. Meanwhile, Acharjee, Laskar, and Tamal Banik lambasted Malviya alleging that the BJP leader had intentionally distorted history to insult the Bengali language.
