SILCHAR: It was from the Barak Valley that the victory lap of the BJP in the entire North East started, stated Dilip Saikia. In his maiden visit to the Valley after assuming the charge of the state BJP, Saikia said that in 1991, the party registered its first massive electoral success as 9 MLAs and 2 MPs were elected.
Saikia, who arrived in Silchar today with a two-day campaign assignment, addressed his first rally in Dholai. Amid much enthusiasm amongst the party workers, Saikia remembered the tremendous sacrifice of the leaders of the Barak Valley in the early days when the BJP had virtually no organizational base in the state. Saikia targeted the Congress for misguiding the Muslims on the Waqf issue. He said that the BJP government in the Centre always focused on the real development of the women and the marginalized sections of the Muslim community. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi with utter courage abolished the Triple Talak, an ill practice that kept the Muslim women in a distressful situation for decades. The Congress tried to misguide the Muslims at that time too, but the minorities rejected their vote bank politics, Saikia added. “And now the Modi government has introduced the Waqf Act with the sole intention of helping the marginalized and deprived section of the Muslim community,” maintaining this Saikia said that this time too, the Congress was spreading false propaganda that the new Act would snatch the land of the masjids and graveyards. He however expressed confidence that the Muslims would reject the nefarious politics of the Congress as they had started to believe that Modi’s ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas ‘ policy also included them.
Saikia said that the BJP-led ruling party alliance would register a thumping victory in the ensuing Panchayat election as evident from the fact that already in 37 Zila Parishad and almost 300 AP seats, the party candidates were elected unopposed. He said that it was a pity that in the Congress, leaders were seen accused by the workers of selling the party nominations.
