COVID-19 THREAT: Phat Bihu festival, several Bihu functions cancelled

LAKHIMPUR: The celebration programme of the Phat Bihu festival, the cultural pride of Dhakuakhana, which showcases the bond of harmony and integration among the ethnic tribes and community of the State, has been cancelled due to growing threat of the widespread coronavirus contagion at present.

This year, the festival was slated to celebrate on May 7 to May 9 by organizing various cultural events like the previous years at Mohghuli Chapori on the bank of River Charikariya with the participation of all sections of the society, irrespective of caste and religion. But at present, the tally of COVID-19 positive cases has risen in Dhakuakhana, including some other parts of Lakhimpur district. As the consequence, all the scheduled programmes of the Phat Bihu Samiti festival have been cancelled. This declaration was made by Pradip Chamua, the president of Phat Bihu Samiti, as per decision taken in a meeting held at the Phat Bihu venue. Phat Bihu festival could not be celebrated last year too due to the adverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown situation.

In addition to it, the three-day long Rongali Bihu programme, organized under the auspices of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) from April 27 to April 29, was also cancelled due to the same reason. The organization took this decision on Thursday in a meeting held at Swahid Bhavan. Similarly, the Telahi-Kamalaboriya regional unit of AASU and Panigaon regional unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad cancelled their two-day long Rongali Bihu programme, slated to be held on April 30 and May 1. The Rongali Bihu programme, organized by Salal Gaon Yuva Samaj at Batori Botala Parijat Sangha premises on April 25 was also cancelled as per decision taken in a public meeting held on Thursday. In addition to them, several Rongali Bihu programmes, organized under the auspices of different organizations, institutions, self-help groups in different parts of the district were cancelled in view of the second surge of coronavirus contagion.
