DHEKIAJULI: Tragedy struck the remote village of Ghoradak in Assam’s Udalguri district, as 48-year-old Uddhav Kumar Bishwakarma, a poor daily wage labourer, lost his life in a brutal elephant attack on the night of June 6. His wife, Pabhimaya Bishwakarma, critically injured in the same incident, was battling for life at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, with doctors reportedly considering amputation of one of her legs.

The incident occurred around 10 pm when a rogue wild elephant stormed into Ghoradak, a village nestled along the vulnerable Indo-Bhutan border, and launched a violent attack on Uddhav’s home. Both husband and wife were severely injured in the attack. Villagers rushed to their aid and immediately called the 108 ambulance service. Shockingly, the ambulance turned back midway due to fear of the elephant, forcing villagers to arrange private transportation to Tezpur Medical College Hospital.

Despite all efforts, Uddhav succumbed to his injuries on June 8 at 9 PM. Pabhimaya was later referred to Guwahati due to the severity of her condition. Now left homeless, helpless, and in grief, the bereaved family survives only on the mercy of villagers who are collecting donations for food, treatment, and even the funeral.

Adding salt to the wound, the comments allegedly made by the visiting public representatives have further ignited public outrage.
