MANGALDAI: In a bid to improve students’ language skills and academic excellence across government schools in the district, The English Society of Darrang has been formed at the initiative of newly-appointed Inspector of Schools, Ratul Kumar Das. The society comprises all English teachers in the district and aims to promote language practice, discussion, and communication skills among students through a series of transformative and reformative steps.
The consultative group includes the inspector of schools as president, Hitesh Hazarika as vice-president, Nandeshwar Baruah as secretary, Narul Alam as coordinator, Azimuddin Ahmed, Tanma Sharma, and Rajshree Thakuria as assistant coordinators, with Hridayananda Deka, Dilowar Hussain, Munmi Hazarika, Mrinali Hazarika, Jayanta Kumar Bora, and Mainul Haque as members.
The English Society has already initiated efforts to create an immersive environment for English language practice in both English-medium and Assamese-medium schools. Students across high schools, senior secondary, and higher secondary institutions now participate in daily morning assemblies that incorporate English speeches, “Thought of the Day,” vocabulary drills, newspaper reading, quizzes, group songs, yoga, and more.
Out of the six working days in a week, morning assemblies will be conducted entirely in English on two days, in Hindi and Assamese on two other days, and the remaining days will feature a blend of all three languages. These sessions last for 15 minutes and commence at 9 a.m., fostering linguistic diversity and confidence among students.
Additionally, the society plans to implement remedial English classes, reading and dictation sessions in both English and Assamese, phonetics, spoken English, and foundational language instruction techniques.
In the first meeting of the society held on June 4, chaired by vice-president Hitesh Hazarika, it was decided that all teachers from classes VI to X will actively participate in the mission activities. Spoken English classes will be held twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with class X teachers serving as coordinators for the programme. Moreover, each school will establish its own English Society to monitor and promote these initiatives.
Inspector of Schools Ratul Kumar Das addressed the meeting and encouraged sustained efforts toward enriching the language skills of students, marking a potentially significant shift in the educational landscape of Darrang.
