SILCHAR: Reports of illegal felling of trees and even hunting of animals by unidentified miscreants in the eco-forest adjoining the Assam University campus have sent an alarming message to all the concerned corners. Rampant hunting in the other parts of the forest near the university had forced a number of animals fleeing to the university campus. Recently, animals like deer and porcupines were seen wandering the eco-forest adjoining the campus. But making the situation worse for the animals, the poachers have now reportedly started to target them in and around the campus. Noticing such incidents in recent times, the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science convened an awareness programme where apart from the university members, officials of the forest department and local representatives also participated. All the speakers unanimously admitted that strict measures should be taken to stop such illegal activities and to preserve the biodiversity of the area. Interestingly, during the discussion, more alarming incidents came to light. Miscreants were involved in illegal cutting down of trees using sharp weapons. They had even threatened a conservationist who attempted to report the illegal activities. The miscreants even resorted to vandalism, the locals claimed.
The forest officials confirmed that they were aware of the situation, assuring that they have informed the matter to the higher authorities so that an action plan could be mooted to stop such illegal activities. Decision was taken to organize more such programmes to educate the local people as well as the students about the conservation steps.
