LAKHIMPUR: A demonstration programme on post-harvest machinery was conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Lakhimpur under the aegis of Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART) under the guidance of Dr Prasanta Kumar Pathak, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Lakhimpur, on Wednesday.

A total of 30 participants comprising farmers and rural youths attended the programme. The programme started with the welcome address delivered by APART Assistant Project Scientist Priyamjit Roy. He also gave a brief overview of APART. Project Associate Mouchumi Dutta placed her expert view on scientific management practices of paddy fields while laying stress upon the positive impact of mechanization in context of the present situation where people are facing labour issues.

While carrying out the demonstration, APART Project Scientist Priyamjit Roy highlighted the cost effectiveness and minimal labour requirement of mechanical harvesting over manual harvesting. He also discussed and demonstrated the working of reaper machines in the field. Mouchumi Dutta put forward an interactive session with the participants where she pressed on the immense importance of mechanization to withstand post-harvest loss by the farmers. She threw light on different machines used in cultivation of paddy, giving special importance to the post-harvest machinery.

APART Research Technician, Durlov Borah and Research Technician, IRRI, Sanjay Kumar Yadav assisted in demonstrating the reaper. In the same programme, efforts were also made to create awareness among the farmers regarding use of modern technologies and machineries in farming. Field supervisor Angelus Tirkey and Field animator Gabriel Chandiguria of Tezpur Social Service Society actively participated in the programme.
