SIVASAGAR/DEMOW: Assam is traditionally rich in bamboo. Various art forms have been created from bamboo. Bamboo industry has been prevalent all over Assam since time immemorial. But the Bokota area of Sivasagar district is more advanced in the field of bamboo handicrafts than any other regions in Assam. More than 80 per cent of the families in the Bokota region are involved in the bamboo handicrafts industry.
To see the craftsmanship of the area, Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav along with District Development Commissioner Bitupan Neog and Circle Officer of Demow Revenue Circle Phyllis Wrangchal visited Bokota area on Sunday. The deputy commissioner was very impressed to see their creations when they reached the house of Pankaj and Poli Dehingia, the proprietors of ‘Prarambh’ a unique institution of cottage industry and the house of Anand at Nawsholia village. It is pertinent to mention that many tourists as well as foreign tourists visited the Bokota region this year to witness the bamboo handicrafts. The Deputy Commissioner said he would make efforts to take this industry further in the coming days.
