MANGALDAI: "The Village Defense Organization is a voluntary organization working with dedication and devotion not only in ensuring the safety and security of the citizens, but also in acting as a bridge between the police and public. The volunteers of this organization have been rendering yeoman's service to the society in the hour of crisis. With the cooperation and support from cross-section of the peace-loving people of the State, normalcy has been restored. It is the need of the hour to play a vital role in making our society free from all anti-social activities like drugs and to protect the women and children from all atrocities and injustice. I hope that the volunteers of the Village Defense Organization in Darrang district will be able to make a total change in the district," said Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta while taking part in a function at Kharupetia Police Station on Thursday evening.

He also appreciated Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan for his able leadership to lead Darrang Police. The Kharupetia Thana Committee of VDP and police officials on Thursday organized a function to felicitate Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan on being awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on the eve of Republic Day. In the function, Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan extended a hearty welcome to DGP Mahanta with a phulam Bihuwan and a xarai in the traditional way.

In the function, the organizers also offered felicitation in public to 25 senior citizens and VDP personnel for their exemplary contribution to the society. DGP Mahanta also offered felicitation to a senior citizen with a phulam Bihuwan and a shawl.

Taking part in the felicitation function, Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan expressed his gratitude for the felicitation and said that the people of Darrang district deserved appreciation for their cooperation with the police in making the district a peace-loving district. Media person Bhargab Kumar Das also addressed the function attended by deputy adviser of Village Defense Organization, Mukut Saikia, Circle Inspector Dandi Borah and Circle Organizer of Village Defense Organization Kushal Chandra Medhi. Earlier, Officer in-charge of Kharupetia Police Station, Sub Inspector Abhijeet Kakoty extended a hearty welcome to DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and other guests.
