DIBRUGARH: The historic DHSK College (Autonomous) observed its 80th Foundation Day on Sunday. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazarika said in his inaugural speech that an educational institution should always think of achievement as a balanced state and everyone involved in the institution should devote themselves to creative things. He urged the teachers, staff, and students of the college to always take the challenges ahead as an opportunity.

Dr Hazarika appreciated the college authority for organizing such a thought provoking programme. In this programme, resource person Director Historical and Antiquarian Studies Dr Sangeeta Gogoi said that the world can live in peace if there was cultural tolerance.

On the topic “Mapping Connections with North East India and South East Asia: People-to-People Connections,” Dr Gogoi said that knowledge acquisition was not complete through books or technological media alone. She said that knowledge of language was equally essential.

Dr Gogoi said that the cultural elements of different ethnic groups in the North East of India had never lost their identity because every ethnic group had cultural tolerance and therefore, the North Eastern states were still given the status of seven sisters.

In her speech, Dr Gogoi presented the Indian cultural elements including Ramayana, Mahabharata, gods and goddesses, and religious rituals in Southeast Asia with informative photographs from Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, China, and Thailand.

Before the beginning of the meeting, the delegates were welcomed by NCC cadets and Gayan-Bayan. At 10 am, president of the DHSK College Governing Body Abhimanyu Baruah hoisted the flag, after which Principal of DHSK College Dr SK Saikia lit the lamp in front of the statue of one of founders Padmashree HB Kanoi. After receiving the Ashwini Charan Chowdhury Memorial Award, Dr Bharati Dutta, Retd Professor of the college, said, “I am very impressed to be presented with this award in the name of a great person.”
