DHUBRI: Dhubri police launched crackdown on traffic rule offenders and regulated e-rickshaw movement from rural areas to the town, which in recent times has created severe traffic congestion and completely thrown the traffic movement out of gear.

However, the increasing number of e-rickshaws has become one of the major problems in managing traffic in Dhubri town. In 2016, there were only 300 e-rickshaws in Dhubri town, which slowly but gradually replaced traditional rickshaws. However, the number of e-rickshaw went on to increase each passing year and now its number stands close to 3,000, though not more than 500 e-rickshaws got registered with the District Transport Office and Dhubri Municipal Board.

A source in Dhubri Municipal Board informed that the problem of traffic congestion was compounded when nearly 2,500 e-rickshaws from the village areas surrounding Dhubri started entering the town and caused traffic jams and congestion. When contacted, Traffic Inspector of Dhubri Police Station (Sadar), Mahesh Kumar informed that after three months of study on the traffic movement jointly by the police traffic management team and officials of Dhubri Municipal Board, a plan was drawn to regulate the traffic at various points.

"As per plan drawn to regulate the traffic movement, no e-rickshaw is allowed to enter the town from Amco Road, Police Outpost at Criss-Cross of IG Road, BN College point, while Dhubri Civil Hospital on Mission Road is the last point for e-rickshaw of town area," Mahesh Kumar said.

He also informed that for smooth traffic movement, one-side parking is allowed on busy roads and one-way traffic movement has been permitted from September 20. Violation of the rule would attract wheel-locking and subsequent fines, wearing a helmet is compulsory for rider and pillion, said Mahesh Kumar, adding that in the last three days, over Rs 50,000 fine was collected from two-wheelers for wrong side parking.

Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gurav Dilip, chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board and the traffic management team thoroughly inspected points of traffic congestion in the town for several days and finally introduced rules and regulations in Dhubri town.

However, Dhubri e-rickshaw union protested against the traffic control at various points and the stopping of e-rickshaws of Gaon Panchayats from entering the town.

The union held a meeting on Thursday at Panchughat and resolved to submit a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police and chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board, urging them to withdraw the restrictions clamped on e-rickshaws of Gaon Panchayats in entering into Dhubri town.
