DIBRUGARH: In view of the ongoing severe heatwave conditions across Assam, the Office of the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), Dibrugarh, has issued comprehensive guidelines for all government provincialized, Tea Garden (TG)-managed, and private schools in the district. These measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of students during the extreme weather.
The directive, signed by Dr Samiron Bora, DEEO-cum-Inspector of Schools, outlines several precautionary steps to mitigate the effects of the intense heat. According to the guidelines, morning assemblies should be held in shaded areas, classrooms, or halls. Schools are also required to share daily temperature readings during the assembly to raise awareness among students.
The DEEO further advised that, wherever possible, no more than three students should be seated on a single bench to ensure comfort and minimize overcrowding. Safe and clean drinking water must be provided outside every classroom, and students should be encouraged to drink water at regular intervals, preferably every 30 minutes. To maintain a comfortable learning environment, all electric fans in classrooms must be functional. Immediate action should be taken to repair or replace any faulty fans. Additionally, students should not be required to wear blazers, waistcoats, or ties during the heatwave, and those experiencing discomfort in shoes may be allowed to wear sandals.
The guidelines also state that if any student exhibits signs of uneasiness or heat-related illness, their parents must be contacted immediately, and medical help should be sought from the nearest hospital. Schools have been instructed to keep parents informed about preventive measures through messages or phone calls.
Furthermore, it stated that all the outdoor activities are to be suspended during this period of extreme heat. The DEEO has also directed that vendors selling ice creams, fried foods, or other roadside food items must not be allowed near school premises. Students must not be permitted to leave the campus during recess to buy food from street vendors.
