DIBRUGARH: Senior BJP leader Prasanta Phukan on Thursday was inducted in Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet. Prasanta Phukan is a popular leader in BJP and he is the incumbent MLA from Dibrugarh Legislative assembly. After getting the news, Phukan’s supporters gathered in his residence and burst crackers.

The Dibrugarh seat was regarded as a Congress stronghold until 2006 when Phukan won the seat. Since 1957, Congress has won the seat 10 out of 14 times, while BJP has won it twice. On two other occasions, CPI (1957) and Janata Party (1978) emerged victorious.

“I got the information from Chief Minister’s X post in social media. I have been inducted in the cabinet and I like to thank our Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for showing confidence in me and giving me the chance to work with him in his cabinet,” said Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan.

On Saturday, Prasanta Phukan will take oath as the new cabinet minister along with other MLAs. Phukan is one of the senior BJP leader from upper Assam who was neglected but this time he has been appointed in the Himanta Biswa Sarma cabinet.

“Prasanta Phukan is one of the key BJP leader and in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, BJP has given a commendable result in Dibrugarh Legislative assembly. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal contested from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha and he got a good numbers of votes from the assembly. Phukan’s role was important in the elections and he worked hard for Sonowal,” said a political analyst.
