MANGALDAI: The flood situation in Darrang district has turned grim following incessant rainfall over the last 36 hours. The unexpected first wave of flood meanwhile has claimed one life in Patharighat area on Monday night. The deceased, identified as Pankaj Dutta (36), a resident of Sareng Pacchim Chuburi village under Patharighat Revenue Circle, was reportedly washed away by the turbulent overflowing Dimila River. He is survived by his wife and a child.

Meanwhile, as many as 15 villages under Patharighat Revenue Circle have been submerged by the overflowing water of rivers Dimila and Kalpani. There is a report of breaching the Dimila River embankment in a couple of places while water overflowed the embankment in several other places. Bheruadol and Sareng are two worst-affected villages. The floodwater has damaged the Duni-Sareng connecting PWD road, thereby disrupting traffic movement. The power supply was snapped for more than 36hours.

On the other hand, the surging water of River Saktola on Tuesday breached its 30-feet stretch of embankment at village Bor-Athiabari under Mangaldai Revenue Circle. Circle Officer of Mangaldai Revenue Circle Nayanjyoti Pathak rushed to the spot and informed The Sentinel that flood water submerged nearby field areas, mainly of Bor Athiabari and Potalsingpara villages and necessary measures have been taken with the help of the water resources department for repairing the breached portions.

Meanwhile, State Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika immediately arrived at the spot along with Mangaldai legislator Basanta Das and former legislator Gurujyoti Das and visited the area to take stock of the situation. Similarly, overflowing water of River Dhanshri has inundated hospital, bank, drinking water projects and other public institutions and a large area of public habitats, including Kopati, Ghiladhari, Bagisa Kash etc in Dalgaon area.
