Flood water wreaks havoc at Gohpur

BISWANATH CHARIALI: Due to incessant rain, the flood water of the Chatrang River created havoc in the Chhatrang Majgaon area of Ward 8 of Gohpur town on Monday.

The rising water of the river completely drained about 40 metres of a dyke of the river near the railway track in Majgaon area. A team of SDRF personnel who later reached the spot, rescued around 40 people who were waterlogged and brought them to safety. A 75-year old woman was reportedly washed away by flood water while she was offering prayers in the naamghar. However, she was rescued by local people and was hospitalized. The repair and construction of the dyke of the Chhatrang River is underway with a scheme of Rs 15 crore for flood prevention of the river. A section of the flood victims blocked National Highway 15 in the middle of the town at 11 am on Monday and staged a massive protest. The protesting people withdrew their agitation when representatives of the Gohpur subdivisional administration who reached the protest area assured to consider the demands of the people.

Meanwhile, the subdivisional administration of Gohpur has managed to rescue the waterlogged people and arranged for them to have a shelter camp in Gohpur Higher Secondary School. Around 97 persons, including children from 17 families, who were affected by the flood, have taken shelter in the shelter camp till the time of filing this report. The subdivisional administration has also arranged a medical camp at the said camp.

The rising waters of the Balijan, Magani, Brahmajan and Helem rivers also flooded several areas including the famous Bholaguri tea garden in Gohpur subdivision on Monday.
