DIBRUGARH: Trucks belonging to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) are causing severe traffic congestion near Dr Lila Gogoi Flyover in Dibrugarh. The issue has become a major concern for residents of Convoy Road, who are facing considerable inconvenience due to the illegal parking of these trucks along the service road.
Recently, the residents submitted a written complaint to the Chairman of the District Road Safety Committee, urging immediate action against the continuous parking of FCI trucks beside the flyover. According to a local resident, the trucks en route to the FCI godown in the Banipur area are frequently parked for long periods along the service road. This blocks the movement of other vehicles and prevents residents from accessing the by lane and the main road.
“The narrow width of the road makes it almost impossible to overtake or manoeuvre around the parked trucks. This has led to frequent arguments between truck drivers and residents, and in some cases, there have been near-miss incidents that could have resulted in serious accidents,” the resident added.
Residents also allege that truck drivers often use inappropriate language when confronted. The letter submitted by the locals further highlighted a serious safety concern regarding the high speed of vehicles and two-wheelers on both sides of the service road, with some reportedly travelling at speeds of 80–90 km/h. The absence of adequate speed control signs has only increased the risk of accidents.
The letter pointed out that while there are two speed breakers at either end of the service road and one rumble strip near the Children’s Home School, the current infrastructure is insufficient to regulate speed. Moreover, the speed breaker sign near the school is installed at a low height, making it hard for pedestrians to notice, especially while walking.
However, an official from FCI, Dibrugarh, claimed that traffic management does not fall under their jurisdiction. “It is the responsibility of the police department, not us,” the official stated.
In response, Dibrugarh Traffic Inspector Mrigen Saikia said, “Whenever we receive complaints, we issue fines to the truck drivers. The matter is currently being handled by the District Commissioner’s office, and FCI has already been informed to make necessary arrangements for truck parking.”
