Guwahati: 96 Flags Hoisted In Kalakshetra To Mark Bhupen Hazarika's 96th Birth Anniversary

GUWAHATI: A total of 96 flags were hoisted on the Sankardev Kalashetra premises here in Guwahati to mark 'Sudhankantha' Bhupen Hazarika's 96th Birth Anniversary. 

Noted personalities from different spheres such as college professors, art and crafts graced the occasion and did the honours of hoisting a flag each remembering the 'Bard of Brahmaputra'. 

Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust has also organized a two-day cultural event in Kalashetra where many artists from Assam and other parts of the country would take part. 

A representative of the Cultural Trust also said that the Bhupendra Jyoti magazine promotion is going to happen during the two-day cultural event.

Meanwhile, a few events are also being held at the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi which is situated in Jalukbari of Guwahati city. 

Bhupen Hazarika's contribution to Assamese culture and music will always remain alive in the hearts of the Assamese people as Hazarika is such a tall personality in the world of music that people from all over the country came to know about his musical prowess.

His musical acumen was also praised abroad in many countries and he was greatly influenced by English music producer Paul Robeson and his song 'Bistirno Parore Okhonkhyo Jonore' is largely influenced by Robeson's 'Ol' man river'. 

The government of India recognized Hazarika's contribution and posthumously awarded him with India's highest civilian award the 'Bharat Ratna'. Hazarika also was a recipient of the highest musical award in the country 'Dada Saheb Phalke'. 

Hazarika was so loved by his compatriot singers in India that he made stalwarts like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar sing Assamese songs. 

Hazarika's Birth Anniversary was also celebrated in his 'second home' Tezpur where noted writers and journalists paid their tribute to the maestro in Tezpur's Bhupen Hazarika Kalabhoomi.
