MANGALDAI: Darrang district chapter of the Assam Medical Service Association (AMSA) joined hands with the countrywide celebration of the 34th National Doctors’ Day at the Youth Club meeting hall on Tuesday. The event, held in two phases to ensure uninterrupted patient services, began with the unfurling of the AMSA flag at Mangaldai Civil Hospital followed by tributes to veteran and retired government doctors namely Dr Sirajul Haque, Dr Pabitra Kr Tahbildar, Dr Brajen Bhattacharya, and Dr Nirmal Ch Sarma at their residences.
In the evening, a commemorative event honoured the birth and death anniversary of the Bharat Ratna recipient, legendary physician and freedom fighter Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr Dipti Baruah, Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang, lit a ceremonial lamp before Dr Roy’s portrait in the meeting, chaired by Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami, President of AMSA’s Darrang chapter.
Dr Mahibul Alam, the district body’s Secretary, outlined the event’s objectives. Taking part in the function, Dr Nani Gopal Saharia, former AMSA President, delivered an insightful lecture on Dr Roy’s life and works, philosophy, and enduring values. Distinguished speakers, including senior journalists Bhargab Kr Das and Homen Kakati, along with former AMSA office bearer Dr Kamala Kanta Sarma, and Dr Dili Ram Adhikari, highlighted critical issues. They emphasized the need to support young doctors by improving working conditions in government hospitals, recognizing outstanding contributions annually, and advocating for government patronage of the event. The celebration also honoured four senior journalists, Bhargab Kr Das, Abdul Khalek, Mayukh Goswami, and Homen Kakati, for their contributions to society.
